Why do people keep connecting pandas to the earthquake?
Wild pandas are endangered and found exclusively in southwest China, which is why they’re a symbol of China! Japan is nowhere close and has never had a wild panda population! Just because they’re both Asian countries doesn’t mean pandas are crawling everywhere.
The last giant panda owned by Japan came from the Beijing Zoo and died in Tokyo in 2008. There are currently about 10 other giant pandas on loan from China that are spread in various zoos in Japan, but certainly none that were affected by the quake. I traced these photos in TinEye and they’ve all been circulating the internet since long before this year’s Japan quake.
If you learn one thing from this:
Pandas are not from Japan! (Oh, and factcheck.)
Hundreds of new cars waiting to be shipped out from Japan piled together and caught on fire. Most of them look like Infiniti G Sedans, which is a shame because those are nice cars.
Anyone want to try to identify the other model in the picture? I know they’re coupes, and their greenhouse shape looks almost like a GT-R’s. But their taillights look more Inifiniti-esque. Give it a guess?

Following the March 11, 2011 earthquake in Japan, this terrified giant panda grabs the leg of a policeman.
AHHH why do people keep doing this?? this is from 2008 earthquake in CHINA… not the 2011 earthquake in Japan
Not even that. I’ve found accompanying news stories (1, 2) that date from January 2006. Way to go, internet rumormill!
The official caption is this:

The news is ablaze on Twitter and Tumblr, but Lady Gaga herself hasn’t even tweeted about it and I’ve found 0 news sources that confirm this information.
It’s also interesting to note that this earthquake was similar in power to the 2004 earthquake in southeast Asia that killed 200,000.

Believe it or not, the White House actually has an official Tumblr photolog. Perhaps Tumblr is finally mainstream?
