   This would be a good story for another 2012 film

   Say, a small chunk of Earth’s crust sank into the ground, into the mantle, somehow. There’s then a big hole between the other tectonic plates. They float around infinitely, keep crashing into each other and chipping off the edges. And then the Earth is just a big ball of lava. Oh my.
