You know, I’m not a movie person at all. Stepping inside a movie theatre is an annual event for me. But The Social Network is one movie I want to see. I don’t know why, but I’ve just heard good things about it. For the record, it has a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes while The Dark Knight and Inception only got a 93% and 87%, respectively.
I first saw the 500 million friends ad campaign about 2 months ago. I had thought it would turn out to be some budget movie made for geeks. I mean, how can you make a movie out of a freaking website? What an awkward title! Justin Timberlake is in it? Haven’t we learned that singers always make for lousy actors?
But as October 1st came closer, I started hearing mad praise about it. No, it’s not just the best release this week, not the best movie of the season, not quite even the best movie this year. Rolling Stone says, “[It] defines the dark irony of the past decade.” Damn, now that is something.
So, maybe 2010 will be the year I watch two movies. I already watched Despicable Me back in August.
That “maybe” is because the film is not yet showing at my theatre, and because for now I’ll have a hard time finding someone who wants to watch such an awkward-sounding film.
